HOW TO PLOT VIDEO

Plotting Basic Vocabulary

x-axis:

A horizontal number line that extends indefinitely  in both directions left and right from zero. Positive numbers are to the right of zero, and negative numbers are to the left of zero.

y-axis:

A vertical number line that extends indefinitely in both directions up and down from zero. Positive numbers are above zero, and negative numbers are below zero.

coordinate plane/grid:

When a horizontal number line (x axis), and a vertical number line (y-axis are combined to intersect at right angles where zero appears on both axes, four sections – called quadrants are formed.  When the tic marks for the integers of each number line are extended, a 2-dimensional mapping grid is created. This is also known as the Cartesian plane.

point of origin:

The point of intersection of the x-axis and the y-axis, which creates the ordered pair (0,0).

coordinate plane/grid:

When a horizontal number line (x axis), and a vertical number line (y-axis are combined to intersect at right angles where zero appears on both axes, four sections area formed.  When the tic marks for the integers labeled on each number line are extended, a 2-dimensional mapping grid is created. This is also known as the Cartesian plane.

ordered pair

The set of one x-coordinate, and one y-coordinate, (x, y) represents one point on the coordinate grid.  They must be written within parentheses. (x-coordinate, y-coordinate) The x-coordinate is ALWAYS first! The order never changes. Thus the term ORDERED pair.

Each quadrant has unique positive and negative attributes for the x and y coordinates located within that quadrant.

You are ready to start plotting ordered pairs on a coordinate grid. It is easy to make mistakes, so be kind to yourself, and take your time. If a line all of a sudden goes randomly through your design and doesn’t look right, it probably is not right. Check to see if you mixed up x and y…or maybe one or even both coordinates should be negative.
