Scarecrows were put up in fields by farmers to scare crows away from their crops.Unfortunately, the crows were not fooled into thinking the scarecrow was the farmer, and did not fly away. Farmers even tried attaching things like cans on string that would blow in the wind which deterred a few crows. Overall, the scarecrows were ineffective, but remain fun symbols to represent the fall harvest. Of course “The Wizard of Oz” added special endearment for the scarecrow.
